I have been to jail and you do not have to do drugs while there. Of course, I wasn’t undercover, but I also don’t present similarly to a lot of the other people who were there with me. At one point I was labeled “white bread” and at another point I was called “a drug addict with credit.” There’s definitely a population of people who do not do drugs while incarcerated. That’s because a lot of us were fighting really hard to get out on time and pick our lives up from a really low point. You go to the hole and your time is extended if you get caught. I’m not sure why these participants think they need to do drugs to be accepted. When you’re incarcerated a lot of inmates will end up forming strong bonds because they have nothing and the system is against them. They have to stick together and the drama doesn’t change that at the end of the day. I have never seen a more strongly bonded community. People don’t seem to understand the culture between inmates. Inmates have nothing. They are in survival mode. They have form a tribal bond with each other out of necessity.
