After disassembling my differential it needed to be cleaned before I reassembled it. I also had plans to paint it while I was at it. Why not? This video covers all of those processes.
**Note** I would strongly recommend you wear a respirator during the prep portion as well as for painting. I woke up the next day with a heck of a sinus headache and had some really weird snot to go with it. To avoid that, wear a respirator during the prep work as well.

you don't even have to hammer the tape, just take a blade and cut the edge I was taught this by an industrial painter lol
That brush in the air tool sounds like that rubber tipped air tool thing they clean your teeth with in the dentist's office 😀
The hammer trick is similar to what I do, but I use the flat side of a razor and just run iut along the edge a couple times until it separates.
you need something like: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Warner-2-3-8-in-5-in-1-Glazier-Putty-Knife-with-Rosewood-Handle-2716/205053730 that one has a fancy handle, there are versions with plastic grips that should be cheaper. very useful tool for removing gaskets, starting to separate two mated surfaces and the like. pretty sharp and decent edge retention..

Watching this series to rebuild my explorer 8.8, just wanna chime in and recommend an engine hoist to suspend heavy objects for painting. Did a front subframe like this perfectly.
Why didn't you power wash it?
Treat the axle tubes like a shotgun barrel…. Brass brushes and then fix a "patch" loop on the end of your stick to swab it out.

I'm re-watching these videos, and I would change one thing: Use an RCMP (Rust Coat Metal Primer) before using any paint — that way, you use a brush for the primer, then you can use whatever brand of paint you want.

My rear diff fill plug is irreversibly ruined. I possibly could bore it out, but I've been brainstorming and then googled front fill plugs on a Chevy. I have an old 1986 F150. Would you drill a small fill hole in the front of a Ford diff cover with a short bolt or if I can think of an alternative? I'm tempted and think I can make it work. Thoughts? Thanks.

Hey man not sure if your like me but when i clean all my tools up i use gojo wipes they work really good get all the grease and stuff of then follow with the blue shop towels keeps tools and box clean.

That little trick you showed us with the tape. A plastic hammer works well for that too and won't harm anything.

i have a question reg these wire wheels. are they any special coz the ones that i can buy are ~45ooRPM or in the best case ~8ooo RPM . Angle grinder are able to rotate about 20ooo .
