Siberia’s rapidly melting permafrost is changing the landscape

ABC News’ Patrick Reevell reports on the melting permafrost in some parts of Russia that’s putting roads and buildings at risk of collapse, and may contribute to more greenhouse gases.

  1. The permafrost thaw is perhaps the greatest existential threat brought on by the environmental crisis- I’d argue worse then a blue ocean event or forest dieback. However it also may have one of the simplest solutions.

A father and son duo recently reintroduced bison to a region badly effected by permafrost collapse and it has already shown major success in slowing down the thaw.

Next to transitioning away from fossil fuels Rewilding is the most significant thing we can do to mitigate climate change.

  2. And before you criticize my last text as you usually do I was referring to Alaska and last time I looked at a map it was and ALWAYS WILL BE America's ,everyone's either a lier or a critic on these sites dum dum

  3. Why is everyone always picking on the Siberian permafrost how about the Canadian permafrost or American permafrost or better yet the Nordic permafrost they are ALL melting better yet fella go look in mirror and put the blame where it belongs ,don't forget to smile 😊

  4. It's also a major problem in Northern Canada and much of the land is subsiding becoming bogs and in parts washing away into the Arctic Ocean. Siberia is much larger though.

  5. Y’all are so lost. If the gas emissions were that bad do you think we could survive. The gas can’t make thick glaciers melt but not kill us. The planet has always heated up. There was an ICE-AGE. So I’m guessing we caused that to melt too. Idiots

  6. So if the animals are in the permafrost then it want frozen when they died . So it was once not frozen and thugs lived there. If the god-complex folks had lived then I bet they’d be setting fires to stop the freeze . But you can’t play God .

  7. I think you're all crazy. It may be warmer in Siberia but the earth isnt warming the way its portrayed. The global temperature values come from data collected around the world that were rolled together to calculate an average for the entire planet. What the global numbers don't show is that temperatures have changed at different rates in different parts of the world. On a large scale, the amount of change depends upon whether a site is located on land or at sea, in the northern or southern hemisphere, and at a pole or the equator.

  8. If the coldest place on earth is warming, there’s no turning back, end times is here, repent and get with our Lord Jesus Christ, there’s not much time left.

  9. Well…it’s okay to see an ancient mammoth…I’m afraid we gonna see some defrosted ancient virus that’s still alive🦠 like the mother of all viruses…it will make a good apocalypse movie name “Global Warming”.

  10. Great. An arctic sealine for Russia and China to reach North America within hours. "Monroe isolation"

Who cares about melting permafrosts? It's the problem to the next generation. We can't change our proud way of life for that.

  11. The use of Edison generators needs to become common. We don't need to crank a generator to create electricity. We can use the field magnets of the generator to move the armature magnets and coils of copper wire. We can create electricity without fuel or wind or water or steam. The field magnets can move the coils of copper wire in the magnetic field. We add inverters and transformers to deliver high voltage AC power. We can deliver any voltage AC power continuous peak power without fuel or pollution.

  12. We lived alongside with mammoths in the distant past it's a little strange but I feel we should bring them back and place them on Antarctica

  13. Global warming is a natural cycle of the earth. This will be good for northern latitude regions. This will allow for more farming, agriculture and food production to meet the demands of global overpopulation. Global warming is the reason mankind has been able to prosper over the last 50,000 years. We can't support 10 billion people in an ice age. Embrace the warmer weather 😎

  14. I have come to understand that many are living in denial and disbelief in considering global warming can have some sort of massive fix. Any and all your data and or knowledge in this world will not and cannot began to repair what has taken centuries to damage. Enough will finally be enough. As I've stated in similar vids, this planet will soon join as other planets are…a universal graveyard of dark, dead, and cold floating lifeless rocks, with mostly methane as its main ingredient.

  15. It's the natural cycle of earth called the earth's Procession, which is the main reason for climate change, it's a natural cycle of earth which is a change in the angle of axis of earth from 23.5 degrees tilt to almost 30 degrees tilt over a period of 25,800years and during the cycle of Procession the path of the sun across our skies changes with it and the suns ecliptic circle changes so temperatures in the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere will continue to change and already you have shown that the permafrost is melting in areas of Russia, it's a natural cycle of Procession of earth, and humans cannot stop the climate change at all, we have to ADAPT.

  16. You know once humans have been wiped off the earth because we make it uninhabitable for ourselves to live on anymore, it will be something else to see the planet spring back and begin covering up all of our mistakes. Maybe by then all the rich people will have fled to Mars on Elon's rockets so they can struggle and die trying to make it there.

  17. More Fear Porn by the Decietful Media. Do they even know what the temperature was in Siberia today ? I Bet Not ! Do you ? Right now 4 a.m. friday morning 10 degrees feels like -2 degrees. Deep in Siberia its 0 degrees with a low tonight of -15 degrees.

  18. We had a “nice” run, but is over ! We have sealed the deal.
20 years ago, like in Aerosmith’s song, we were living on the edge, but now we have passed the point of no return. Sorry pacha mama !

  19. the only crisis is in the peoples minds who believe this dribble-remember the last ice age-then it started warming-no cars-less than a billion peeople-no industry to speak of-before the ice age the earth was warmer-aka-dinosaurs in the artic-wasnt the end of the world just part of the climate evolving and changing like it has and will bee till the end-too bad americas 50cent army has to call everthing a crisis-just keeping ignorant people on edge every minute of everyday-the reality is people will adapt as they have since the beginning-itll get colder again w more ice ages but maybe there wont bee any humans left as they might not survive these demons instilled into weak minds-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  20. what if zombies actually come to life. because notice how in zombie movies it’s usually the older generation to die off first while the younger generation usually survive ?
