I believe the “root” causes of what drives immigration from under-developed countries to developed ones have been identified for quite some time—poverty, lack of opportunity, lack of security/violence, all of which are based in how wealth and resources are distributed by the governing class. While it is an American virtue to promote and support democracy worldwide, is it realistic to assume that the US is going to alter the geo-political structure of Central America so drastically and in a brief period of time, to reduce the known drivers of immigration? To get even close, it would take international coalitions, trade agreements—years of investment and monitoring of that investment to ensure that it isn’t being funneled through the same corrupt channels that concentrate wealth currently.

   That’s a long term strategy and while it makes sense to approach from this angle but what about the short term? Why are so many risking so much—even sending their children across alone—right now? What is driving that? Nothing drastically changed in Central America over a six month period. No coup d’etats, no wars, no famine. Of course, the pandemic has had an impact on the whole world but South America has fared far worse than Central America when considering this context. Perhaps the ‘root’ cause about why now is what needs to be answered. Perhaps the belief that the pendulum has swung back, immigration by crossing the border is likely to be a successful endeavor because immigration laws are supposedly fluid, illegal one day, not so illegal the next. That is what is truly at the ‘root’ of this surge currently and what needs to be addressed—is it acceptable to enter this country without going through the process of getting a work visa, for a better opportunity? I certainly don’t hold that answer but it is the elephant in the room.

   What I can say is that I am an immigrant to this country. An immigrant who came through legal channels as a child during the Iranian Revolution. It was not easy as we left everything we had and were stranded in various countries while awaiting acceptance of a visa. I am grateful to now be a US citizen. I appreciate everything this country has given me. I hope we can continue to welcome immigrants in such a way that allows them to succeed, such as through work visas which would pay a fair wage and also allow for taxes to be collected. As long as the market for cheap, cash pay labor exists and those who are hiring are not penalized for not using the work visa program, then the opportunities will continue to be plentiful, but at a price to the immigrants who receive less pay, often in hazardous conditions and Americans who are expected to pay taxes.

We are taxed on the income earned from our labor, the wealthy don’t labor but they earn income from their wealth. We labor hard and pay our taxes so why are Republicans giving away our tax dollars to the ultra wealthy? Why isn’t their income taxed?

VP Kamala Harris claims to have made two earlier unannounced trips on small military transport planes, supposedly of Vietnam era, to the border with Mexico. She says she loves to climb 150 staircases a day, similar to transport plane staircases, when time allows. Some say she avoided the reporters as to what she says. She just met few junior border enforcement officials, unannounced, about how tough their jobs were. She says border enforcement and ICE are already catching illegal aliens at the southern border and deporting them, as it always has been. Harris said in an earlier unannounced trip that she is committed to paying overtime pay to overworked border supervisors and working border agents at the southern borders, if anyone worked overtime. She says her instructions to border officials on unaccompanied minors may be construed to be too lenient or that she may sound too Democratic. She claims this June 2021 trip is the first trip announced to the press and to reporters, and that it's her third trip. In two earlier unannounced trips, Harris may have asked about the welfare of unaccompanied alien children caught at the southern borders. In two earlier unannounced trips on two old military parachute planes. She essentially told younger enforcement to to keep up the good work of catching aliens and offering meals to unaccompanied alien children pushed across the border by smugglers (coyotes) during two supposedly unannounced trips on old military transport planes, likely of Vietnam era. She says the military does not throw away Vietnam era planes, and she likes trips in old transport planes. She supposedly made two earlier unannounced trips in two transport planes, which may be C-130 or something similar. In one trip in an old military transport plane, Mrs. Harris may have asked United States border enforcement young officials she met at the southern borders, to write to her official email address directly, whether she ever met these border enforcement agents personally or not, with pay issues, to ensure that they actually get overtime pay. This is in the highly unlikely scenario that newer border agents may have been working overtime hours once a week or so, without being paid for overtime. Harris says one of her two earlier unannounced trips in an old transport plane to the border outposts near the border with Mexico was ordered by Biden, who wanted to make sure that deserving border enforcement agents and supervisors get overtime pay, and that they actually worked over time.
