Mozambique’s president declared three days of national mourning on Wednesday as the southeast African country struggles to recover from a powerful cyclone that has claimed hundreds of lives, submerged villages and washed away homes.

Tropical cyclone Idai made landfall near the port city of Beira late last Thursday and slowly moved inland over the weekend, carving a trail of destruction across central Mozambqiue, southern Malawi and eastern Zimbabwe. The storm brought heavy rainfall and wind gusts of up to 105 miles per hour to the region, where bone dry conditions gave way to massive flooding.

As the scale of devastation widens, aid agencies said it might be the worst cyclone-related disaster ever in the Southern Hemisphere.

  4. You know this looks like the flood in Midwest US just the people are different color. So Seriously what country is going to send us water food and shelter at our time of need?

  5. Massive destruction has occured for poor people of Mozambique making them home free and food free…We must play all our roles for providing them with basic needs ASAP…Great USA for sending help as death toll cross over 1000 as big cyclone has just demolished everything…May Allah keep us safe from such diasters and give us power and strength to help our brothers living under open sky….

  6. "What America can do"? We can't even help ourselves. Still no water in Flint and Detroit. Holla at GB. Maybe they have some leftover funds from the royal wedding budget.

  7. FYI to those that wondered how climate change would ever be our greatest national security threat…you know the thing y’all laughed at Obama for saying. Well as this happens more and more frequently in these regions the people will migrate to parts of the world that can sustain a better future. This will happen here in a micro version when people in south Florida have to move inland. Imagine that on a global scale. You think you have an immigration problem now? Lol …figure out how to walk and chew gum at the same time because climate change should be a top priority always.

  8. It's the fault of human being who don't respect the beautiful nature the result super cyclones tsunamis and tornadoes if people are not dying they are losing their homes

  9. I just come to realize this happened a week ago?!! How come I never heard anything..? I really wish I had a way to help all of them, my sincere condolences to this tragedy
