It is a hardware Chip.
It is in the smartphone, the Captivate doesn´t have the Chip.
So forgett NFC.

The only way for this to take off is if everybody supports it from the get-go. Apps need to be written for this quickly and more phone types need to use it more. This is going to take Google, Apple, Microsoft and everybody else in the mobile world in order to really catch on and be useful.
how do you know whats got nfc? i dont want to just wave my phone at random things looking stupid lol.
