Projekt Ara. Want.
Just give us two batteries and a spare charger.
such a pity that the phone looks like a pile of shit 🙁
idk maybe you can upgrade the modular peices you have if there's a bigger screen and sadly the other modules are alil too small but there would probably be like legos third party modulars being megablocks and even duplo ,the problem I see is if a module is wired incorrectly and fries the entire phone
Modular phones would be pretty sweet, in my opinion, but only if you could wrap a case around it. Something like that would only work if 3D printing was more mainstream and that most people knew the basics of AutoCAD.

3:37 AAA the phone added in a bearded man module so quickly.
modular design has a future in furniture , and cars obviously… but for smartphones its a gimmick , and gimmick forever..
The modular parts will be outdated fast , and compatability/fragmantation rears its ugly head
Not everyone would have access to VR Gears so I don't think It will be the future of Technology
Ok honestly tell me how much you are paid by Samsung and Apple for this video…
Three words: unrecycable excess waste. Not every module will be sold, ending up in some landfill, together with the phones being replaced annually already…
Ultimately, and unfortunately, I don't think it is. Each company will have their own modules, and most likely it would be not much more expensive to buy a new upgraded handset that it would be to buy two replacement modules to upgrade your device, given their research and development and design phases. (In my opinion)
but yeah if it wears, you can just change em
The big make-or-break for the modules is two things, both of which you mentioned in the video – compatibility in future years, and third-party adoption.
Thing about GREAT third party adoption – you get your phone out for a hiking trip, and you're worried about battery, drops, etc. No problem – you have one of those otterbox/lifeproof esque cases, but this one also has a huge extra battery built into your phone now. Combine that with a couple extra batteries and some powerbanks and you have a phone that will last you all camping trip for your photos.
I think that LG should make the g6 (if it is also modular) compatible with the g5, but the g7 should be different. LG however should offer a discount if you trade in your old module on the new ones (to keep people buying them), and then the g8 should be compatible with the g7. G9 and G10 together, etc.
Modules are the way, just like a desktop PC is modular but there NEEDs to be a standard. No one will care if it changes every year, every two years or even every 5 years. I have used a Handspring Visor regularly for more than a decade, the modules really enable much more than the original device ever will. Project Ara has a better idea, Google is attempting a standard.
Imagine if LG had worked with Google and made the first phone with an Ara compatible module and all other companies needed to do to make it work was have that "port" or docking bay for the module, the software could be baked right into new versions of Android.
Creating your own standard of modules for each company will go the way of proprietary connectors.
I understand that base phones these days could run circles around old PDAs and such, let alone flagships but a module would be able to extend the life of the base phone by a wide margin, incremental upgrades would be modular and optional.
Back to Lg, they really need to keep this one standard if they are serious about modules and not just making headlines for a new phone, I'll admit it's a nice way to replace a battery on a metal phone, but if they are serious about modules they should keep their modules' design from one phone to the next since they are the first to get a "modular" phone to market.

Modules are, but LG G5 isn't the next big thing.
You should be able to make the phone as thick or thin as you want, with the features that you need.
Something like Project Ara, but something that isn't in development for another 5 years
Why can't you see there's nothing new with those modules? doesn't any device has a USB port?
This guy is always showering us with unwanted commercials which was the only reason why I stopped watching TV….
ALLWAYS YOU ADD STUPID COMERCIALS…
The worst part of modules would be that you can't share them with other phones unless both the phones are same.
i want them to have a better camera grip that's exactly like a dslr and has the mode switch for the different camera modes. that would be awesome.
gonna wait to see what the new v10 brings this year though. hopefully it's modular too, and has 4 cameras instead of the 3.
it is not a good idea, the module just increase the purchase of customer, fraud. more parts, more possibility to have hardware glitches
I think it'll be so helpful to replace the camera and battery as they are the most components that get worse over time & also get updated very often which is cool to have the latest all the time!
the best case of modularity would be like a fairphone..of a company comes up with complete future proof modular design in which all components are replaceble and upgradeable by the end user it will put many many phones manufactures to the test of time..imagine being able to plug and play with the latest soc/gpu and just plug and flash the latest OS to accomodate..would be ground breaking camera modules and such..meehhh being able to upgrade the camera itself is more feesable to me..maybe even selling new chassis kits with New modules come out to convert in a seamless fashion..brilliant
unfortunately, i think only samsung and apple have the power to bring modular phones mainstream.
Good video Jase. Where to begin? I like what stated about advocating the benefits of the LG modular design. The benefits are not just for geeks but for those of us business folks too. However, I also agree with your comments about future expansion and the form factor that LG chose for the G5. I will reserve judgement till I see a G5 in the flesh. You are also correct about the benefits of PC's being expandible over expansion in a smartphone. I don't see why we should not consider the smartphone as a central component of a larger system either. HP is doing this with it's Windows mobile offering. If LG were smart, this is a route they might consider. I use my Galaxy S5 with a full size monitor, keyboard and mouse when I do writing. A smartphone should not be just a toy for geeks, but computer in it's own right. It's a computer that pretty much everyone owns these days.
I think you can keep the modules and update the screen and processor every couple years.
I feel like people failed to see the LG G5 as a normal phone. Even if the Friends aren't the next best thing, it's still usable.
Besides, the main purpose is only to add removable battery.
Yes, that's why Google started Project Ara years ago.
Lg's version of modular is shit. I'm still waiting for Project Aurora aka phone bloks. That is the future of modular
Think of DSLR + lens! And give me a module with a better camera + image processor
I think the problem here is the price. Modules, VR, holograms or any new technology the price is always a problem.
The space gray one looks good I think unlike the another Ugly colours
When I first saw it I actually lolled because it looks so bad. Then I thought maybe its just a ugly prototype then laughed again when I realised LG are actually thinking this will sell. Seems like LG are following the path of HTC
Nope, it's going to flop.
Not a good idea…
