The Texas Supreme Court in a heartless new decision has refused to provide guidance to Texas doctors who have refused to provide any abortion even if medically necessary to protect the life or health of the mother, a de facto elimination of the only abortion right in Texas, and have intentionally ignored the fact that that doctors on the ground don’t know how to interpret the state law drafted by non lawyers. At best, the law should clearly spell out specific situations in which an abortion is not allowed, and doctors should be assumed to have the authority to determine when a case fits those situations. In a free society, whatever is not illegal is permitted. Fascists prefer whatever is not required to be prohibited.
The American Taliban needs to be stopped. Only way to do that is to VOTE these clowns out.

That is scary
Homeless people have teeth. And they eat food. The best way to care for these teeth is to brush regularly and well, and to have a dental hygienist clean and inspect them every six months, and for a dentist to occasionally show up to deal with any tooth decay that might happen. Worst case is to NOT address that decay, until an abscess forms and the tooth is unsalvageable, so the dentist will remove it entirely. Not replace it, just remove it.
Even companies with really good health insurance have mediocre dental insurance. The homeless get nothing. Dentists, like MDs, swear the Hippocratic Oath. But they are only obliged to render free aid to broke people who it’s an emergency. Strangely, it costs more to do a single tooth extraction than regular cleanings. Plus, the patient is left with all their teeth.
I had a friend with a vit-D deficiency. All of her teeth got rapidly decayed. (Don’t ask me how, I’m not a doctor nor a dentist.). When most of your teeth have major cavities, there’s no “just chew on the good side of your mouth”. It hurt more to eat, than to starve. Suddenly, MDs would refuse to listen to her medical problems. They assumed she was anorexic, and therefore her problems must be psychological. She wasn’t anorexic, she just couldn’t consume enough calories. And she did have three separate medical issues, that went untreated for a couple years.
Sometimes, diabetic people will get swelling and weird sensations in their extremities. Left alone long enough, they can develop gangrene in their feet, which then have to be amputated. Insurance companies (or at least the policies some states give to their indigent residents) will pay for a wheelchair, but not a prosthetic foot. And they wouldn’t cover the preventative care that would have saved the foot. Even though, in the long run, preventative care is cheaper.
We are pound foolish and penny wise.
And now we’re going to apply this same logic to gynecological care and obstetrics.

Once again a state now has the right to own a woman's body and her life. That is called slavery. VOTE BLUE FOR FREEDOM OF BODY, RELIGION, POLITICS. VOTE BLUE TO DEMAND EQUAL RIGHTS TO ALL AMERICANS AND NOT TO BE TREATED AS SLAVES BY A STATE. Mike, it sounds like you have your answer right there in black and white in the Texas case. Also:
1) I'm sorry but doctors DO need to make legal decisions. That's why they carry malpractice insurance AND yes, hospitals have access to ethics teams and legal council and this is exactly the case where they need to be consulted. Medical students spend a great deal of their training on ethics.
2) TX Supreme Court gave you the guidance saying that a doctor who says they can't give you care despite a life altering or life ending situation has made a legal mistep. The prevailing opinion of the court is "Save the mother's life." and it's fairly explicit.
Yes the law is poorly written. And yes, abortion should be legal. But it seems like this law either has had a legitimate chilling effect based on the poor wording or doctors are creating this into a political football where one doesn't exist. I think more OBs should put their licenses on the line and then when Texas has no more OBs, they'll wonder why. But not giving a woman a much needed abortion is like a doctor standing by letting someone choke on a meatball for fear of being sued. It's just ridiculous on the doctors' collective paralysis.

Dear Mr. Popok, Thank you for another totally illuminating lecture on the latest from the big state of Texas and how their Supreme Court has vanquished all pregnant women, no matter how sick they are, to the dungeons. Doctors treating them are persona non gratis and may go to jail for giving them or their babies any aid. We are back in the Middle Ages and this "wise decision", if I understand correctly, was handed down by a woman.
All I can say is women should move out of the State of Texas in droves… it's dangerous for your health…even for those right-wing judges.
