Tariffs might be able to work if the US actually had a large manufacturing sector but like many countries the US doesn't. If you put tariffs on certain materials used in what manufacturing that there is those companies will either shut down completely or leave the US to places like India, Vietnam or Pakistan. Plus if the Federal Government doesn't have income tax how will the National Debt actually be paid for? Then this will affect different States in different ways because the Federal Government won't be able to support States like Mississippi anymore and they will then have to increase their taxes to meet the money they need to function. Plus most people's health care insurance will increase because the Government won't be able to put that $12500 per person into the healthcare industry. So fewer people will be able to pay for healthcare insurance and many companies are less likely to insure them either because of the cost. Particularly if Trump also gives companies a big cut in their taxes as well.
