Paul Cangialosi of 5Speeds.com stopped by the shop to help me rebuild the T5 transmission in my 1979 Ford Fairmont Project. During the build, we needed to work out what speedometer gear I should use. In this video Paul covers how to determine how many teeth are on a speedo gear, and what gear is right for your application.
So if you’re looking to figure out what speedometer gears you’re going to need for your next build, look no further.

If I take out the cable gear on an 88 Ford, can I count the drive gear teeth with it in the transmission.
Came back to these videos a couple years later lol, thanks again guys, that gear calculator seriously helped with my oddball project.
1k rpm / mile on the speedometer?? That can't be right?
On David Kees site it says black one is 7 tooth.
How do i know what range of driven gears the current drive gear will work with? Is there a chart? I'm not changing my drive gear if I don't have to.
I have a 1994 Pontiac Trans Am. I believe had 273 gears put in. I need to know color gear, is set for this change.
Can you give me any info, regarding my issue?
Thank you
If have a c4 transmission with a 7 tooth drive gear, 3.73 rear, and 245/40/18 rear tires, what speedo gear do I need?
So i have a 77 chevy c10.. 3.08 rear end th350 transmision that im not 100% sure but pretty sure isnt the original one ..the speedometer doesnt work because gear is wrong.. Im about to pull it out this week amd see what tooth count is on the output shaft..but my question is how does it determine which ome you need if it isnt the original one? Maybe I'm missing something here..does the drove gear on the outout shaft not matter which one it counts as to what speedo gear we hook up to that to make it work or do i have this wrong? 😬 sorry 1st timer here trying figure this out.
AMC used a lot of Ford parts. I've been told that their white 23-tooth gear fits on an AMX with a T10 4-speed, 3.54 posi and E70-14 tires
It’s for 700r4 Automatic transmission
I have a 31×10.50r15 ratio is 241 I was just needing to know what speedometer gear I need

Eric, hi 👋.
I enjoy your video’s.ðŸ‘ÂðŸÂ½.
Ok, I have a 70 Chevy Impala Custom.
350 engine w 300 turbo fire. It originally came with 15†Rally rims. But, I replaced them with 14â€Âx7†Dayton rims. What gear should I use on my transmission. If you know by chance.!yes it’s a Low Rider. Rey Zapata. San Fernando, California.
Hello, I have a serious problem with my vehicle. I own Mahindra thar crde 4×4 2013 model. Very often I observe the speedometer gear is getting damaged (especially when I hit a pothole). This is my 5th time I am replacing the gear. It’s 17 teeth model. I really don’t understand the root cause. I would be very grateful to you if you have an answer for this. Thanks in advance
I changed out the speedometer in my '75 Dodge pickup from an 80mph to a 100mph one. My speedometer registers around 5mph faster than my actual speed. (this is at around 35mph, i dont know if it gets worse at higher speed or not.) Would that require a gear change?
do you know DAIHATSU CHARADE speedo driven gear tooth size
You can indeed count the gear teeth if not from the east coast
Eric, I have 1969 Chevelle SS with 411 posi track rear end. The tire size on the rear is P-275 60R15. What size spedo gear do I need, thanks for all your knowledge and experience………Ron
I probably shouldn't have consumed "the herb" before watching this… I now think you two are smarter than any professional politician I've ever met! Good discussion, Gents.
1000 RPM's per mile with U.S. cars made after 1965.
Very helpful guys! I have a 65 Fairlane I just got done a massive 17 year project on modernizing and restoring it, swapped the highway gears for 3.55s with a locker. Problem now is when I'm doing 70 on the speedometer I'm actually only doing 55. This video and his website will def help once I figure out how many teeth on my drive gear.
WOWâ¤
Wait what, they both have 8!
