I’d been considering getting a jump box for the shop for a while now and Motorfiend sent me this Micro-start XP-1 to try. I was actually able to use it on a car with a dead battery before I made this video and it worked great. In case you were wondering it was a 3.5L V6. As you’ll see in the video it has no trouble starting my Ford multiple times. I suppose I could have run the test until the battery actually died, but for me, if it starts once that’s all I need. That said, I wasn’t as impressed with the other attachments and hook ups. For me, they’re practically useless. Given that, I could just put the Micro-start and battery cables in my glove box and have a jump box whenever I need it. In fact what I’ve done is put it in my ’emergency box’ with the Slime inflator. Now if I get a flat or have a dead battery I’m prepared.

It will start my android phone, no problem…
Could you take this on a plane. I want to take one with me overseas to start a bike there.
That’s the fake one ?
Initial thought was yea right from our tool distributor. We had a tractor….not a mower. Say mid size….no battery. Fired it! Couldn't believe it. He sold 5! Used it for cells and a boat. Now just rests, but still…thought it was cool!
The shiny ones are Antigravity knockoffs.
Love one..
Back in the good old days when you tube was not fucking you around
Holy shit this must be an old vid that thing has a 302 in it now
Nice test. There's more technology in that jumper pack than is in the entire car you tested! Wow…..looking under that hood reminds me of how homemade those Fords were (and still are in some cases) LOL!
After you connected the USB cable, you need to turn the battery on. But you still went ahead and badmouthed the unit for your own mistake.
Your review prompted me to try the phone adapter on my "different brand" charger — I had the same results as you until I pressed the adapter into the phone "really hard" and then it made the connection and started charging my phone. You might want to try it again, just so you will know if it actually does work. Thanks for the review!
It will charge your phone, you have to press the power button on the XP-1 once you connect it to the phone.
I had checked it out the one that your reviewing is a fake Chinese knock off. The difference between the original and the fake is the outer casing. the fake has a glossy finish and the original one is not glossy but rubberized finish. Probably you need to check it out with the company.
Why are the jump starter cables soo dam short! it's tge same with all these jump starter. What if I needed to jumpstart a wider battery and the leads don't reach? Or what if I actually wanted to ground it to a ground part?
Does anyone know who sells longer ones? I'd buy a Chinese unit on Amazon not this Microstart. There are many with 600 peak amps for about $60 vs. this 400 peak amps for $150
Did you tap the power button after connecting the phone? Mine didn't work at first either, so I took the noob's way out and read the printed instructions. It worked spot on when I did what the instructions said to do, i.e., tap the power button.
I bought this same Micro Start XP-1 about two years ago… used it several times to save other's people dead batteries. The problem after two years is that it does not hold charge long sitting in the trunk for than two weeks. So, if you don't remember to fully charge it before leaving for a trip, it ended up with a dead booster pack which does you no good. So, now I have to charge this pack every two weeks (oh and when you charged it now, the last led charge indicator light no longer lit)
I have that Micro Start, I use it for Personal use like on my motorcycle.
I puffed the first one and got it warranted now I only use it for personal use.
I recommedn the Big JumpNCarry with the 2 ga Wires and big clamps for professional use
it will start a dodge ram 2500 diesel, but it can cost you your clamps, I experience this once but it did jump the truck well also frying my positive cable I recommend the xp10 for diesels
mine was a different brand though, and it has the iphone five plug
i picked one of these off of a mac truck a while ago, it works great.
Just got one of these, the mini xp-5 model. I was able to start a Ram 3500 Cummins with that little thing. I know it says not to use it on diesel engines but it was way faster than driving my other truck over to jump start it and it charges my android phone just fine.
I just wanted to let people know that there is at least one company out there making counterfeit Antigravity jump boxes. Amazon has unknowingly sold many counterfeit units that look almost identical, but have inferior parts inside.
If you wanted to buy one, I would contact Antigravity and make sure the place you want to buy from in an actual retailer so that you can get a good warranty. Antigravity will not warranty counterfeit boxes of course.
I own and operate a motorcycle transport sevice in Tucson Arizona and part of the service I provide is jumpstarts for motorcycles where the customer has left a key on. I will not jumpstart a motorcycle if the problem with the starting system is unknown. I've had my Micro Start XP-1 for 2 1/2 years now and it's been absolutely reliable every time I use it. I seldom ever have to charge it. Every time I check the state of charge it always shows 5 lights. I used to use a 15 pound jump start unit from Sears. This little powerhouse has really been a blessing!..
Eric, my name is Bil and hope like hell you can help me with an important decision? I need a personal portable battery suppy/jumper cables. Im down to the Antigravity P-10, the newer model…and the Brightech Scorpion. The specs on the Antigravity is better, but the reviews on the Brightech are much better. Numerous people have commented that the Antigravity model have a lot of problems compared to the Scorpion. Do you know anything about the new Antigravity to the one you demo? I broke my neck in 3-places and am 70-100% paralyzed from the upper chest down. I need to have a feature rich power supply that is reliable, well made, and works to jump my Toyota Sienna XLE Minivan, iPad, iPhone and other personal electronics in an emergency. Thanks very much in advance for any help, advice or updated suggestions on the best make and model of such devices? BTW, I subbed your channel tonight as your automotive videos are excellent IMHO. Keep up the good work and best wishes for continued success.

Be careful with that XP-1 they take a dump after about a year of semi-regular use. A guy I work with had to send his in after nearly a year because it didn't have enough power to jump start a moped. They're mostly for "emergency use". That's what all the tool guys are saying now. You can charge phones, tablets, and computers all day but not jump starting vehicles all day. I have the XP-10 and it's pretty nice. I like the piece of mind knowing that I have it in case my phone or vehicle battery go dead. It's worth buying for that very reason alone.
Could not crank my car with it after about 2 weeks….go's dead soon as i try to start a car.
I have the exact same phone, Galaxy SIII. Ive found that not all chargers will actually work with it. The more technologically advanced our phones get, the more room there is for error. Ive bought brand new, cheapo chargers only to find they dont work at all. Dont consider this a fail, just a lesson learned.ÂÂ
each time you started the motor, when it started it was being charged 50 to 70 amps ? not a good test, except for the first start??  I would ground  the coil wire, then crank for 10 sec wait 20 sec then crank for 10 more 5 or 10 times? that will smoke it? or the starter?
So is this better than the little brother? They do almost exactly the same thing. ..
This is on amazon for $95 as of 2-3-15 🙂
We sell these where I work. Different brand, but same idea. Our customers use 'em to jumpstart diesel trucks and they love em. Only had 1 returned, cause the brain surgeon who used it put the clamps on the wrong post. Dont do that… they can blow up.
i would like to know if it would start a diesel ei 7.3l and smaller.
Nice video. I suspect the reason the cables got warm was because you started more than one time. The instructions say to remove cables within 30 seconds of starting the car.
Great video as always, Eric. I posted this very same comment over on the AntiGravity Batteries YouTube channel over 6 months ago have yet to receive a response:
I'm curious to know the lifespan of this product over time. Batteries naturally age over time and gradually lose capacity as a result – all of them, regardless of type. Li-Ion and Li-Po perhaps age faster than any other type of battery chemistry or technology. As an emergency/ backup starting device, its obvious that this product would most likely spend the majority of its time in storage, fully charged and 'on call', waiting for the next emergency where it's needed. But lithium ion (and Li-Po) batteries dont like to be put into storage fully charged and unused for extended periods of time – that accelerates their already relatively fast 'aging' process and thus reduces their useful service life and storage capacity. Add to that the heat from a motorcycle's underseat storage area (or a parked car's interior glove box or trunk on a hot summer day) and the aging process speeds up even more. So say you've had one of these for a while, haven't really had the need to use it, and then one day down the road you run into an emergency situation where it's really needed. Is it going to deliver and perform as expected? I'd like to hear the manufcturer's input on this.
Will is jump start a car that has been at sub zero temperatures overnight, and by that I mean -10F or colder? That is a real test of the device. How will the battery perform when it has been stored in the vehicle at those temperatures.
Got the same unit. Charges my Samsung phone… no problem.
Nice item but pricey. I can buy a bigger jump pack for $50. Under $80 and I would consider.ÂÂ
to charge yu had to it the power button first then connect
Samsung phones are picky about the charger you use. With my Samsung i have to use a OEM Samsung charger or it won't charge at all but the OEM Samsung charger will charge other android devices. Samsung was probably the worst device you could have used to test with. I bet any other phone would have charged. Plus like other people have said if you would have use the OEM cable that would work to.
Eric, just to clarify the comments on the wires getting hot. The reason they were getting hot is because you were starting the car over and over again. The starter motor, like all large electric motors, pulls a high starting current from its power source, ie the jumper battery system via those thin little cables. Normal use.. someone using this battery will use it once then pack it back up and drive home, rather than starting and stopping the car repeatedly.
Anyway, thank you for the repair videos, they are most helpful.
Hello eric the car guy I actually have this tool myself and it can recharge phone…When you connected the usb to the portable battery and then connected it to your phone you have to press the side button for it to start the charge..and this product is good I use it often at the shop 🙂
It can start at car but not charge a cell phone lol
what amazes me is that (1) such a small battery can start a car that many times, and (2) that they can sell this thing for a little over $100/ whereas a similiar battery designed by the medical industry for a c-pap machine has to sell for 3 or 4 times as much. ÂÂ
Wow this thing is amazing. I want to get one now!
I have the xp-3 which is slightly smaller and without all the frivolous charging capability, except the USB.
I've been using it for about 6 months and it charges my cellphone when in a pinch just fine as well.
As far as starting cars, and trucks, I've managed to start a v10 ford truck with it, albeit the cords (and pack) were rather toasty after the start. But it worked nevertheless and has continued to work since.
I just used mine you have to press the power button then it will charge a phone.
samsung has somthing in their phone thats make them charge only wiht their charger…
I use this at work and it works great for me.
