How to Replace Drum Brake Shoes, 2001 Odyssey – EricTheCarGuy
Well here it is kids another offering of my most popular subject to date, drum brake servicing. I know it’s long but I’ve put a few extras in it for you that I hope you will like and will help you with other things besides just replacing the shoes. Feel free to comment on anything I might have missed, I know I misspoke on a couple of occasions in the video, forgive me as sometimes my mouth says different things than my brain is thinking.

Does this guy ever respond to questions?
"Take some channel locks, throw them on the floor, scream an obscenity". 🙂 Yep, been there.
E brake off and neutral 😉
Thanks for the video!! A Buddy just called me needing help changing his rear brake cylinders. I’ve never done drum brakes before, but I have built motorcycle engines and suspension so I’m mechanically inclined, I’ve also seen many videos on YouTube on how to do something. You’re the only one I’ve seen that left in the parts of actually struggling taking something off. Never have a seen a video that showed when something is a pain in the ass. Makes me feel like an idiot when it is a bitch for me and it wasn’t in the video 😂
Oh brother, 👎ðŸÂ»!
Good job Eric!
Thanks Eric stay on beast mode bro lots of people are watching you
You are easy to learn from and I’ve just found your video on drum brakes mine are shit and shot one cylinder is leaking so I guess I’m doing both sides eh
Good video Eric ðŸ‘Â😀
Great help Eric. Thanks. Enabled me to discover that I had a slightly leaking cylinder, which had never caused any drips on the floor but over time enough oil had soaked into the brake shoes and caused them to swell. I noticed the binding and overheating of the back left drum, which was impossible to remove without learning from you how to use the two threaded holes in the drum. Thanks again 🙂
Watching the supposed pro fight with connectors for 10 minutes will make me feel better when I go out and do mine.
Does loosening the tension before tackling those springs work on civics between 92-99? I have a 98 I want to try to do.
Hi Eric – What is the specific name of the tool you use to get the big spring in place?
"There will be a test!" I became nervous and also took a phone picture.
Here are some tips. When you get the adjusting part test the resistance with the wheel on reason is it might feel good with the drum but the wheel is bigger and more heavy and might spin not so good. Also this be a good time to check if the handbrake is doing it’s job. Give it a pull the wheel should not move on the tightest setting that way you know the shoes are adjusted just right.
The lighting in this video really sucks.

K.I.S.S good work laddie
You ROCK! Thanks for this video. This is one of the best self-help videos I’ve seen on YouTube. As a 325,000-mile Ody owner and DIY mechanic, I live by videos like these. Thank you!
Same as 05 Dodge Dakota, it’s a struggle to remove the top spring, your give more ideas, thank you so much!
Best video fellow I ever watched. He's to the point with general helpful hints and great on detail. The camera angels are perfect. Thanks so much for refreshing me regarding my own brake job. Years ago did all brakes on my old Jaguars before discs. We ever used to rebuild the master cyclingers and water pumps. Thanks again.
are drum brakes universal? is there different sizes of drum brake and shoes between 2012 civic coupe vs any other vehicle? and is the drum brakes accessory all the same?
Was really helpful!! Thanks
This man is just sharing his method of diy you take it or just leave it!
Take a photo on your cellphone after each step. Do one side at a time, so you can use the other side as a guide , they are usually mirror. Images of each other.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with other people to help save 💰 on a job really anyone with proper tools can do!
The sigh after finally getting the spring off pretty much sums up my entire life with working on cars lmao
I replaced the rear drum brake shoes and the wheel cylinders on my 2001 Odyssey using your instructional video. After I got everything back together and adjusted, the brakes work fine. But, my parking peddle was not stopping the brakes. I adjusted the cable length near the parking brake foot lever and no improvements. After driving the car for four days, the auto adjust mechanism in the rear brake assembly was doing it's work and the parking brake started to stop the car a little. This boosted my confidence to adjust the cable length near the parking brake foot lever some more. Now the parking brakes work perfectly. Your instructional video brought me 100% success in changing out the brake shoes and wheel cylinders on my 2001 Honda Odyssey.

Do you know why does rear drum heat ???
This is another great video Eric. Your explanations and camera work is superb. Thanks for the tip about backing off the adjuster to remove tension and then removing the spring from the short side. Great tip.
Simple man, simple tools, simple language! Thanks Eric
