How To Replace Differential Fluids, 1997 Subaru Legacy – EricTheCarGuy
Visit me at: http://www.ericthecarguy.com/
In a way this video is part 3 of the transmission fluid change on this car, here are links to the first 2 videos
Part 1
Part 2
Just for the heck of it here’s a link to the Performance Diagnosis videos that I did that started me on this quest to cure a hesitation problem in this Subaru
For the most part it’s a straight up fluid replacement video no real surprises but changing the front differential is a little tricky till you find the dip stick, don’t worry, it’s covered in the video.

Thank you Eric !!
This is Eric the way I know. Not like all new stupid videos
Curious, why don’t you take the differential cover off and clean the inside?
Good video
Pull a trunk body plug and use a hose from inside the trunk to fill it! Much easier, let gravity work for you
Open the fill first!! Why drain it if you can't fill it?
Great video!
Your videos and website are articulate, organized–respectively well delivered and written. My one suggestion for this video would be to refer to such unknown torque specs as being a little past "snug" rather than "tight." This might further encourage people not to crank down too far on these plug bolts. You've been helping me work on my cars for years. Thank you, your work is much appreciated.
It’s a good idea to bust the fill plug loose first cause if you can’t get the fill plug out and you already drained it your fucked
Would this process work for my 2000 Subaru Impreza?
Hey Eric,
You can try using this 7$ pump next time to fill the differential fluid:
https://www.amazon.com/Plews-55001-Lubrimatic-Standard-Bottles/dp/B000BQW5LK/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1520469278&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=rear+differntial+fluid+pump
You just have to remove that cap that comes on the bottle and screw this on. After that just pump away!

Every "new guy" thats works at a quick oil change joint, needs to watch this video and learn where the hell the transmission, and front diff are, and NOT to drain them. Just drain the oil…. that's it. l work at one, and have had several techs do this all because they didnt want to ask for help. just a pain to take the time to refill them..the newer ones are like a vacuum something or other..thats what i have heard.
July 2012…and helpful to me today. Thank you.
when are you supposed to change the differential fluid
Rear diff fluid looked good, the front diff fluid looked like it needed to be changed.
Nice video. Thank you.
Hello Buddy , I have 1996 Lexus ES300 which is the same exact thing as 1996 V6 CamryThe exhaust pipe in the middle where the resonator is seem to have a factory type of outlet and it's covered with the wiled that piece, there seems to be exhaust leaking from that is that purposely there?? And why
Eric do you still have the Subaru
is there a reason why nobody has mentioned just using a hand pump you can buy at any automotive store I don't understand why you would go through all this BS to try and put gear oil in just a thought
Dear Eric: I purchased my first Subaru brand car since one year. I just discovered that I have to change the Diff. oil. what happens if I haven't changed the diff. oil till 125K Km on my Legacy 2008? and what happens if I change it now? will I have any issue like Diff. voice coming? thanks
The GL5 designation is very important; if that is what the specs call for. Those fluids are designed to create a chemical coating on the gears to prevent them rubbing metal on metal. That coating is constantly being formed and rubbed off and reformed. That chemical process decreases as the fluid ages requiring a fluid change. GL5 fluids need to be changed on schedule. They are NOT like old fashion gear oils.
I don't know why they don't just call brake cleaner "just about everything cleaner". I use that shit on my safety glasses, on shelves, on glass, damn near everything.
