How To Aim Headlights with Hoppy Aimers -EricTheCarGuy

Hoppy’s have been used for many years to align headlights. In this video I walk you through the steps of how to aim headlights with Hoppy aimers. I also cover how to set up the tool for floor slope and also show how to use the different attachments for curved headlights. You can still pick up this tool on some auction sites at a reasonable price but I don’t think they make them anymore. That said, it’s still nice to know how to use this old school equipment.

  1. My 2002 Grand Prix has these type of headlights with the bumps on them, I guess I'll have to just try my best without the tool lol

  2. I haven't used a Hoppy Tool in YEARS!! Another cool reason for me to get an old Car! 😜😂

Eric, I would LOVE to find a reasonable condition old Box 2dr Sedan Fairmont like yours….
Only problem is that too many People seem to think that they're COLLECTOR'S ITEMS or something! 😖😠😞 I just don't have that kind of Money for a project that STARTS out expensive. $1500-2500 is about it.
You'd THINK there would be at least a couple of cheap 2dr Fairmonts out there….
No 4 bangers, no total Rust Buckets, but anything else that runs.
Not looking good, especially here in Arizona, where these idiots think that ANY old Car is a priceless Classic. 😖

  3. Eric, it's been a while since you've aimed your lights with these. Did the adjustments turn out perfectly? No issues with the beam patterns or anything? I am considering buying a used set of Hoppy's I found online, I have 2 vehicles that I desperately need to adjust the headlights on correctly and am hoping that you were satisfied with the outcome of your adjustment. Please let me know if you can before I buy the product. Thanks!

  4. I just found your video because I want to aim my Sunbird GT lamps. Problem: I do have a pair for low beams and two more for the high beams. How can I aim them without this device?

  5. I just picked up a Hoppy Headlight Alignment kit for my 1997 Ford F250 Heavy Duty. Even with a wall, unless you do a bunch of measurements, they aren't close. Plan to use this on my truck, my brother's 1999 Ford Ranger and my 2000 Ford E250 work van. Keep up the good work, ETCG

  6. If you buy a Hoppy kit that has the blue adapters would it work on 98 and 99 Ford and Dodge vehicles with aero headlights? They still have the three alignment points made onto the lamps but they aren't flat like the ones in the video, they are curved.

  7. It has been a few decades since I used a Hoppy headlight alignment tool, but back in the late 70s and early 80s I performed innumerable such alignments. In 2017 I purchased a vintage 1969 Shelby GT500, and needed to replace its headlights. That meant aligning the headlights afterward. I purchased a used Hoppy kit on eBay, and went to town adjusting for the floor slope exactly as shown in this video, then making the needed adjustments – again just as shown in this video. The video was presented perfectly, and I really enjoyed seeing someone reaching back to yesteryear and suing this equipment so well. Working on old school vehicles and equipment is really quite a blast!

  8. You know, it seems that finding someone to adjust these sealed beam headlights is a lost art form, like rebuilding carburetors. This last summer I changed the headlights on my 93 Astro to a new and matching set. The car had been wrecked in winter of 97 and the body shop used plastic headlight adjusting screw nuts with a metal insert. My 94 Astro has nylon adjusting screw nuts which are more durable. A 93 at Pick N Pull also had the nylon style as well as the new ones I purchased from the dealer. The plastic adjusters broke immediately so I had to replace all four of these (both lights) in order to adjust them. Even though my 94 is adjusted properly and the ride heights are nearly identical, I can't match up the 93 with the new headlights. I'm very close, but they are different. I've adjusted out in the road, against the garage door, etc. I've called the dealership body shop, various other body shops and a few quick lube places, and nobody knows how to adjust them any more, even though this same headlight (same as on your Fairmont), were still used as late as 2015 on the full sized Ford and GM cargo vans.

  9. Lol I remember those! Doing headlight alignments in the body shop after front end collisions was standard procedure. In hindsight, these things are rediculous, lol. Great video, brings back memories
