Ive been guilty of not wearing a respirator for spray paint, but that y2k stuff can damage in one instance. Be careful with that stuff. And that coming from me who isnt the biggest stickler on safety.
Being double wishbone, would the lotus chassis be a good chassis to use for a rally car build, you could make much longer wishbones with long shocks.
Your process was 320, 500, 800, and then 3000 right? Just to be 100% sure. What products did you use to clean the headlights?
For how long and at what temperature did you bake he headlights in order to take the off the cover?
You can wet flat and buff single stage paint too! Not just clear coat.
No need for power tools for this whole episode. Just wet and dry sandpaper up to 3000 grit, some water and elbow grease.
It's aluminum, it's not galvanized!
Just be careful what you spray onto the plastic as a degreaser… I got my headlights all sanded flat and sprayed on some carb cleaner as degreaser before paint and….. melted plastic. doh. Need to get some IPA
zero lights with inner projectors have glass lenses by the way.
Thats why you dont use a drill to sand headlights. i always do it by hand and dont use a circular motions. i couldnt believe it when i saw you going at those ridiculously exspensive lights with a drill!

hey chris, like watching the show. a few pointers on what you did wrong based on what i saw here though i believe you already know most of them
1 you started of with 300 grit not recommended unless your fixing gouges in you "paint" i would have started on 600-800 grit paper as the 300 was overkill
2 you used one of them air tools and may have had the rpm to high and you may or may not have focused to much in one area which may have caused the burning. keep in mind that you where sanding plastic and plastic tends to burn up fast
3 i would have gone even as far as using even a 6000 grit sandpaper just to have an even smoother look to the clear coat.

Shouldn't you be wearing a respirator when spraying 2K clear? Heard that stuff is suuuuuuper bad to inhale
2k is the Shit !!! ive done cars,bikes,helmets,gas tanks. all kinds of stuff and people always think i used a professional spray gun. if you want your rattle can paint job to actually look good spend the money on the 2k, it works !!!!
800 to 3000 is where you went wrong

i have really wanted to use that 2k clear in a can stuff. i do carbon fiber stuff and you really need a good clear with uv protection or else everything turns yellow in the sun.
You don't have to sand up to 3000 grit before clear coat, 600 or 800 is fine and the clear will stick a lot better. You could just polish the lamps after 3000 and they would be crystal clear.
The clear you sprayed has isocyanates in it. PLEASE ware a mask and gloves.
