How To Re-Key or Repair a Lock (Honda High Security)

If you have a key that won’t turn in a lock, or you have to carry 2 keys because one of your locks was replaced in the past, this video can help you solve those issues.

In this video I show you how to re-key or repair a broken lock cylinder. Even though I’m showing this procedure using a Honda lock, this is the basic design most locks use, so this information can be used for more than just Hondas. Once you have the lock removed from your vehicle, this video can show you how to fix it.

Interesting, I'm wondering if this kit also works down to the 96's cause i recently had to take mine apart due to some drunk idiot thinking my car was theirs and breaking off the tip of their key in the lock cylinder on my civic, the little gates for the key were pretty similar along with the lock cylinder itself to your element in the video…. thankfully my lock cylinder and key still work well, but would be cool if the kit you used in the video also worked with older Hondas

  2. call me lazy but I get to the 4:11 point and just run a file across all the pins until they're flush, or just take the really proud ones out entirely.
    . Then the old key works AND the new key works. No kit required.

  3. Eric, thanks, I really like looking deep inside my 04CRV and 07Ele without having to actually take anything apart. I very regularly lube all my lock cylinders, so hopefully I will never have a non-working key. Fingers crossed!

  4. Very cool and interesting video! All of my older cars came with a separate door and ignition key and nobody ever thought twice about it. That seems like a lot of work to eliminate 1 key from your key ring. Lol but very informative none the less. Thank you!

  5. Great timing!
    Someone tried to use a "universal key" (aka flat head screw driver) to break into my Jetta, and I'm thinking of going for a salvage yard lock.
    The remote works, but it would suck if the battery died.
    Also a good reason to stop by my old job for a chat (since they should have the re-keying set)

  6. If like to add that the "bumps" on the side of the wafers eventually wear down, and that causes the key not to work as well. This video doubles as a fix for that issue as well.

    My standard operating procedures for this is to match the ignition to the door key. That way, reprogramming the immobilizer isn't necessary, and the keycode still matches thr Vin.

  7. x another thing, when you buy the new ignition switch, just buy the cylinders for the other locks so that all the keys match. Saves you a lot of work in the long run. all you have to do then is just swap the cylinders to match.

Nice video, extremely not your fault, but when the ignition switch was originally replaced in the element whenever it was back in time, the so-called technician that did the job should’ve matched the new key to match the old one. Instead, dealerships are just for the lazy technicians that don’t actually want to work these days. Too bad for the industry. This problem should’ve been avoided years ago. Had a job and done properly thanks for sharing the information though.
