As I said in the video the owner brought me this car along with the supposed fix. The symptoms were an intermittent no start and a message on the dash indicating a security system problem. Apparently this is a common problem with Saabs of this vintage and the problem is usually linked to this siren/security module. Apparently the batteries go bad in the unit causing it to act up intermittently. In this video I show the steps needed to replace the module, it’s actually a very easy job that does not require a lot of tools. So if you have an issue with the security system on a Saab of this vintage you might want to give this fix a try.

Hi Eric yah the error code does not show up with the rest of the idiot lights. It shows up on the console message center. I had same problem on 2004 9-5 with 210,000 yikes

Hi. I'm having the same problem, the alarm goes off randomly for no reason. I've checked everywhere for that module including under wheel arches and it is nowhere to be found. it is a 08 Saab 93. any advice would be very welcome.
If a 4 cylinder 9-5 stalls and won't restart hot, but will restart when cooled, its very frequently the crankshaft angle or or position sensor on the engine block front side near the flywheel. The heat of the nearby exhaust manifold causes a temperature expansion and (sometimes temporary) open circuit internally in the sensor. Dousing with water will cool it and sometimes closes closing the open circuit allowing restart and running for a time. But sometimes it doesn't work even when cool.
Usually this hot run failure is unrelated to random alarm soundings from worn out alarm batteries, when "Alarm service required" will show on the internal Saab Information Display on the central dashboard (not instrument cluster).
I keep a spare crankshaft angle sensor in the car as failure on the road awaiting parts can be extremely inconvenient. But it's not easy to access, the exhaust must be cooled and you need the car elevated, splash panels removed underneath and a small ratchet torx set to change it. Unless you swap out the torx bolt for a matching hex bolt as I did just to make it easier in future.

I think Cr17335 is the two original batteries that goes bad in the module.

I have a 2006 93 and I'm having the same problem. Great video. Other videos really didn't show me how to remove n replace the part. Just gotta find a jack and a horse before I kill myself

Eric, maybe You could help. My problem is that fob sometimes works and sometimes does not. Batteries are new, on both remote controllers is the same. Where to look for the problem? Twice and dry joints?

Another great fix .. we have a 1999 model TURBO SAAB 9~5 WITH THE SAME ISSUE..IT STARTS BUT WONT STAY RUNNING..SO WHEN THOSE BATTERYS GO BAD IT STARTS BUT DIES OUT UNDER A MIN OR LESS.
How do I do if myy Saab is rustcrappy ..should I ignore it for cost and drive like it is or ..what..I dunno Take from the car scraps like weld it on mine..change body from another car entirely?

I have a 2003 Saab 9.3 SE convertable. The thing just shut down on me and i thought it was gas. but it has planty of gas pressure, I replaced the spark plugs. I now will start but wont run long. then I clean the injectors, Cleaned the MAS flow. It have a new coil pack assy on it. but looks like it has a chinnese crank sensor on it. do you think the crank sensor might be the problem?

the neutral safety switch solenoid is just under the battery on top of transmission as well as checking the C.P.S unit down by the turbo these have been a guarantee culprits and first place i go especially when no codes are throw then i go to the d.i.c.

I have a 2004 Saab 9-3 with the same alarm issues and want to simply remove the alarm. I took off fender plastic on front driver's side but it looks a bit different on my year and model Saab. Can you tell me where the alarm is located on my vehicle? also, the only side effect of Removing my siren would be the dashboard message, right? lastly, is there a fuse I could simply remove to completely disengage my alarm? I'm not worried about theft, just want to drive quietly!
ihave a Saab 95 1999. service theft system showing but alarm doesnt go off by itself. anyway. getting crank but no starts. give it a couple of hours and it starts up. today it all went to sh#!. was cranking and then turn key and nothing. totally dead. but all dummy livhts working ect… battery is good. pleaze help me with anything u can on this issue. im dying here.
2000 Saab 93, 155k miles…same problem as car above….intermittent start. I had to sit in a parking lot for 2 hours a few weeks ago since car would not start (give it 20 mins between start attempts), and that's not the only incident. SERVICE THEFT ALARM warning on screen from time to time. Would battery issue in alarm lock up ignition? Can I disconnect alarm system to remedy problem? Research has indicated that same fuses control compressor and/or air conditioning. At a loss…hate to see my Saab go, but I need a reliable car (which it has been until this issue!).
I didn't have this problem, but a different one with the same part on a 2002 9-3 Viggen Convertible. The alarm would randomly go off when it was locked and armed, almost always very late at night. Pressing the key fob to deactivate it wouldn't work, so I just had to deal with it until it decided to silence itself. If you've never heard an alarm on a Saab of this vintage, it is very very annoying!!! Eventually got rid of it because GM ruined that brand. The car was crap…

Had an issue with the bad siren battery causing the alarm to sound ,,  there is a tech 2 option in the Saab programing software that disables the siren and sounds the horn as an alarm instead ,, or you can send the siren in to have its battery's replaced or replace the siren unit itself, ,,
The indication is on the SID in the center console. The SID shows amazing information, have had mine tell me Service Theft Alarm (same issue in this video), a third brake light bulb out, and key battery needing to be replaced.
Also, re-manufactured versions of this are not great. The batteries are the first and mostly only thing that causes this error. Getting a new reman unit just prolongs time or gives you a faulty product. About 50$ and a week of time, you can send your old one in, they repair it and fit it with new better quality batteries then ship it back.

I have an 03 95 that the alarm has been going off on its own and it's becoming more often than not… It does say in the display every once in a while to service anti theft or whatever. I thought maybe the battery was dying in the fob, but I changed that and still it is doing that… this was a great video!!! we love our Saabs. my husband has two 95 9000 one of them is a Griffin. Anyway, the batteries on the part itself can they be changed or do you have to replace the whole part if the batteries are dying?
btw the message comes up on the SID (saab information display) saying "key not recognized" and "service theft alarm" the service theft alarm most commonly means that the backup batteries in the siren are starting to go.
So I drove my saab to pick up food about a mile or less away. On the way it was clicking in the electrical unit or middle console. Then we turn car off, go in, when we come out it won't start. Won't jump. Says KEY NOT RECOGNIZED. I leave it overnight and come back the next evening, it starts with a jump and same key. I may have manually reset it not knowing what I did and that's why it drove me home, but the blinkers wouldn't work and the clicking noise was still there. I didn't wasn't to further damage it so I left it parked until I could get it looked at. It sems people are scared of Saabs where I live. Anyway, it's been sitting about a month or so and it's doing the dame thing, KEY NOT RECOGNIZED, and the ALARM KEEPS GOING OFF. I had to take the fuse out, I live in Apartments. I'm going to try this. Thank you.
This isn't an issue that's unique to SAAB, BMWs from the '90s can have very similar issues with the factory alarm system though this doesn't usually effect the immobiiser as the alarm was often an optional extra whereas the immobiliser was standard so they're separate systems. It can, however, result in the alarm system going off almost any time, including when the car is being driven, as the system reads the lack of battery voltage as an attempt to disconnect the alarm which causes it to sound. Needless to say, this can be rather annoying…
